Why change is hard... and how you can fix it

Updated: Oct 28, 2021

You've read all the books. Taken all the self-improvement courses. And gone to enough retreats and seminars to last several lifetimes.

But you're still stuck. You can't seem to get where you want to go.

Relax. This is perfectly normal.

The reason this happens is that we're trying to make changes as the same person we've always been. It's just like a computer operating system. Imagine trying to send the International Space Station into the sky using an old, dusty IBM computer.

Here's another example.

You are a plate. Yes, a dinner plate. (I hope that doesn't hurt your feelings.) Above the plate is a pitcher of water. But it's not just any pitcher. It's the Pitcher of Change. The holy grail of pitchers! The water inside is from a secret river of change that's sought after by philosophers, holy sages, plastic surgeons and tax accountants.

You can't wait to taste this water. So you take the pitcher and pour the wisdom water over your plate. And what happens?

Nothing. Nada. It spills right over the edges. The plate can't hope to retain this beautiful nectar.

Now imagine you've committed to becoming a new person. You hire a talented and trusted coach (ahem) who assists you with grounding practices... self-compassion techniques... embodiment skills and helps you approach life from your heart and gut rather than strictly from your head.

Most important, all of these habits are disciplines that help you become a new person far different from that dinner plate. Instead, you become a robust and receptive bowl that will hold the waters of change.

That's what Somatic work is all about.
